FileZilla is a free FTP client for Windows, macOS and Linux. With the Site Manager you can save your connection permanently and with encryption.
Install FileZilla
- Download the FileZilla Client from https://filezilla-project.org.
- Run the installer, accept the licence terms and follow the wizard. Decline any additional software offered.
Set up the connection in the Site Manager
- Open FileZilla and click File > Site Manager.
- Click New site and enter a name, e.g. your domain.
- On the General tab, fill in:
- Protocol: FTP – File Transfer Protocol
- Host:
ftp.yourdomain.ch, Port: 21 - Encryption: "Require explicit FTP over TLS"
- Logon Type: Normal
- User and Password: your FTP or cPanel credentials
- On the Transfer Settings tab, make sure Passive is selected.
- Click Connect.
- On the first connection, accept the certificate after checking that it belongs to your domain or the server. Tick Always trust this certificate so the message does not appear again.
Once connected, your computer's files are shown on the left and the server's files on the right.
Note: The Quickconnect bar is handy but may not use encryption, so use the Site Manager instead. More settings are described in the article "FTP credentials and connection settings".
