Thunderbird is a free e-mail client for Windows, macOS and Linux. Here is how to add your mailbox:

  1. Open Thunderbird and in the menu (three lines) choose New Account > Existing Email.
  2. Enter your name, full e-mail address and password and click Continue.
  3. Thunderbird looks up the settings automatically. Click Configure manually to check or enter the values.
  4. Incoming server: protocol IMAP, host name, port 993, connection security SSL/TLS, authentication Normal password.
  5. Outgoing server (SMTP): host name, port 465 with SSL/TLS (or 587 with STARTTLS), authentication Normal password.
  6. Username for both: full e-mail address. Click Re-test and then Done.

Which values apply depends on whether your mailbox belongs to a web hosting plan (cPanel) or to an e-mail package:

  • Alternatively POP3: mail.yourdomain.ch, port 995, SSL/TLS
  • Outgoing (SMTP): mail.yourdomain.ch, port 465 SSL/TLS or 587 STARTTLS
  • Username: full e-mail address; enable SMTP authentication (same credentials)

E-mail package (E-Mail Postfach / E-Mail Business)

  • Incoming (IMAP): mail.hoston.ch, port 993, SSL/TLS
  • Outgoing (SMTP): mail.hoston.ch, port 465 SSL/TLS or 587 STARTTLS
  • Username: full e-mail address; enable SMTP authentication
