Set up the spam filter Print

cPanel includes the Apache SpamAssassin spam filter. It scores incoming e-mail and marks suspicious messages as spam.

Enable the spam filter

  1. Log in to cPanel and in the Email section click Spam Filters.
  2. Enable Process New Emails and Mark them as Spam.
  3. Optional: enable Move New Spam to a Separate Folder (Spam Box). Spam then goes to the "spam" folder instead of the inbox.
  4. Optional: Automatically Delete New Spam (Auto-Delete) deletes spam above a given score. Use this option with care.

Sensitivity and lists

  • Spam Threshold Score: the lower the value, the stricter the filter (default 5).
  • Whitelist (Emails Never Marked as Spam): senders that should never be treated as spam, e.g. *@partner.ch.
  • Blacklist (Emails Always Marked as Spam): senders that are always marked as spam.

Note: Check the spam folder in webmail regularly, especially during the first weeks. Another option is BoxTrapper: unknown senders must reply to a verification e-mail, which can delay wanted messages.
