VPS CORE is a KVM-based virtual server with full root access. It is unmanaged: you are responsible for the operating system, software, updates and security. Our support takes care of the hardware, network and virtualisation layer.

Find your access data

  • After setup you receive a welcome e-mail with the IP address and the root password.
  • The same details are available in the Client Area at https://my.hoston.ch > Services > your VPS.

First login

  1. Connect via SSH: ssh root@YOUR-IP (see the article "Connect to your VPS via SSH").
  2. Change the root password right away with passwd.
  3. Update the system:
    Debian/Ubuntu: apt update && apt upgrade -y
    AlmaLinux/Rocky Linux: dnf upgrade -y
  4. Reboot after kernel updates: reboot.

Recommended next steps

  • Set up SSH keys and disable password login.
  • Configure a firewall and Fail2ban, and create a user with sudo rights.
  • Plan your own backups of your data.

Note: Further management functions (e.g. reboot), where available, can be found in the Client Area under your VPS service. For connectivity or network issues, open a ticket under Support > Open Ticket.
