Your initial root password is in the welcome e-mail and in the Client Area under your VPS service. Change it after your first login.
Change the root password
- Connect to the VPS via SSH.
- Type
passwd(as a sudo user:sudo passwd root). - Enter the new password twice. It is not displayed while typing.
Use a long, random password and store it in a password manager. The Client Area is not updated automatically with the changed password.
Forgotten password
- Still logged in with an SSH key or sudo user? Simply reset the password with
sudo passwd root. - Client Area functions: Where available for your VPS, management functions such as a password reset or a reinstall can be found in the Client Area under your VPS service. A reinstall deletes all data on the server.
- No access at all: Open a ticket in the Client Area under Support > Open Ticket and state the IP address of the VPS. For security reasons, we only process such requests from the account holder's client account.
Tip: Add an SSH key so that you do not depend on the root password in an emergency.
