Point a domain to your VPS and set reverse DNS Print

To make your domain point to the VPS, create DNS records with the server's IP address. If you run your own mail server, you also need a matching reverse DNS (PTR) record.

Set A and AAAA records

  1. Open DNS management wherever your domain's DNS zone is managed (e.g. in cPanel under Zone Editor if the domain uses ns1.hoston.ch and ns2.hoston.ch and belongs to a hosting account, or at your DNS provider).
  2. Create an A record for yourdomain.ch with the VPS IPv4 address.
  3. Optional: an A record for www (or a CNAME to yourdomain.ch) and, if your VPS has an IPv6 address, an AAAA record.
  4. Wait until the change is live (a few minutes to a few hours depending on the TTL). Check it with nslookup yourdomain.ch or dig yourdomain.ch.

Request reverse DNS (PTR)

  1. First choose a hostname, e.g. server.yourdomain.ch, and create an A record for it pointing to the VPS IP.
  2. Open a ticket in the Client Area under Support > Open Ticket stating the IP address and the desired hostname.
  3. Set the same hostname on the server: hostnamectl set-hostname server.yourdomain.ch.

Note: The PTR record is only set if the hostname already points to the same IP via an A record. Many mail servers reject e-mail from servers without valid reverse DNS.
