Weak or reused passwords are among the most common causes of hacked websites and misused e-mail accounts. A few simple rules will protect your Client Area, cPanel, WordPress and mailboxes much better.

What a secure password looks like

  • At least 12, preferably 16 characters long.
  • A mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters, or a long passphrase made of several random words.
  • No personal information such as names, dates of birth or your domain name.
  • A separate password for every service, never the same password twice.

Practical tips

  1. Use a password manager that generates and stores secure passwords.
  2. Use the cPanel Password Generator when creating e-mail, FTP or database accounts.
  3. Enable two-factor authentication for the Client Area and for cPanel.
  4. Change passwords immediately if you suspect misuse or when an employee with access leaves your company.

Note: Do not store passwords unencrypted in documents or e-mails. hoston.ch will never ask for your password by e-mail.
